San Francisco-based New Relic was founded by Lew Cirne in 2008, and provides an application performance monitoring (APM) SaaS platform. Since it’s foundation, New Relic has grown rapidly and besides APM now offers Mobile, Server, Browser and Synthetic monitoring. Their analytics platform Insights collects the data from these products and allows clients to gain better insights into the performance of their environment.
Customers of New Relic are, or have been FlightStats, Yellow Pages, Zendesk, StatusPage.io, Hautelook, Bleacher Report, Miniclip, Tapjoy, Zumba Fitness, Tableau and Move.
More clients of New Relic can be viewed on their website, which includes customer case studies.
The application performance data, and other data monitoring tools of New Relic can be used to control traffic routing within a multi-CDN solution. Based on their monitoring, traffic can be re-routed around under-performing servers, congested PoPs and other network issues.
New Relic is partnered with MaxCDN and Cedexis, demonstrating the relevance of their availability and server resource monitoring products within the CDN and web performance ecosystem.
AppDynamics is a San Francisco-based IT operations analytics and application performance management (APM) provider. The company was founded in 2008 by Jyoti Bansal, who worked for APM tech provider Wily Technologies (now part of CA Technologies) prior to founding AppDynamics. Their services are centred around monitoring and managing the availability and performance of applications within a broad IT environment.
AppDynamics has numerous offices around the world, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Australia, Singapore, India and Japan.
Solutions offered by AppDynamics include, but are not limited to real-user monitoring (RUM) for browser and mobile, synthetic monitoring, database and server monitoring and application analytics.
AppDynamics got into hot water with CA Technologies, who filed a patent infringement suit against the company over their APM technology. CA Technologies had acquired the patents through their acquisition of Wily Technologies in 2006, the same company where Bansal had worked on the design and development of their performance management products. The dispute was settled two years later in favour of CA Technologies. Under a similar claim that Wily Technologies patents had been infringed on, CA Technologies went after New Relic in 2012.
Notable customers of AppDynamics are, or were UBS, Net-a-Porter, DIRECTV, NASDAQ, The Container Store , Sony, eHarmony, Cisco, Overstock, Expedia Affiliate Network and Hallmark.
While AppDynamics monitoring solution includes synthetic data and RUM data, we do not know whether their platform is suitable to use within a multi-CDN solution.
